Epilogue
Every year before Christmas, Lizzy, Jane and Charlotte would visit the Gardiners on Gracechurch Street. They squeezed into the tiny bedroom they had shared long ago, curled up on the beds with hot cups of tea, and caught up on everything the year just passed had brought them. Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner, in the sitting room, would smile at the happy sounds drifting down the stairs.
Then they would walk down Hobson Street to visit Mr. Walkerâs bookstore. They would greet him and his wife, and share tea with them in the back room, all sitting around the big table. Mr. Walker would always have treasures he had tucked away for them, which they could purchase as Christmas presents for their husbands.
Of course, they would stay in touch in other ways throughout the year, through letters or visits to one another.
Charlotte had created a lovely home for herself, her husband and her children, on the land the Colonel had purchased.
Jane and Bingley had found an estate more to their liking, and more than three miles from Longbourn, settling into their home only a dayâs drive to Pemberley. They had three children now, all with unruly hair.
And Elizabeth and Darcy lived in contented happiness at Pemberley. Georgiana lived with them until she had made her debut at eighteen years of age and met the man she would marry. She spent most of her time in London but visited often.
Pemberley had taken on the warm glow Lizzy had felt when Darcy had expressed his feelings to her at Jane and Bingleyâs wedding breakfast. The tiny feet of their children could be heard running through the halls, meals were spent not only eating but in happy conversation, and Darcyâs valet was even heard to be whistling once or twice! They hosted friends and family, held an annual Harvest dance for their tenants, and a dazzling Christmas Ball that was the highlight of everyoneâs year.
Societyâs elite would still stare at them when they went to London, to the theatre or the opera. They would look at each other and laugh.
Darcy sometimes thought back to the days he had tried to forget Lizzy, to put her out of his mind, and shook his head in wonderment. What he might have lost!
And Lizzy reminisced as well, from time to time. The anniversary of the loss of her Papa was always a little sad for her, although she knew he would tell her to enjoy her life - and the Pemberley library. She had his pipes and pipe rack placed there, near a comfortable chair. She rarely thought of her kidnapping, except as it had brought her closer to her dear, beloved husband. Mostly it was the happy times that occupied her thoughts, and the new joys she was sure would come.
For life never stopped changing.
